Thoughts on studying further as an adult

The expectation when you finish school is that you know what you want to do and who you want to be for the rest of your life. But the reality is that life is still a long time to live and it is almost impossible to make this kind of decision as a 17 or 18-year-old just finishing high school. You only really find your groove after a couple of years and you don’t really know who you are and what you want to achieve out of life. So, it may be that you studied for a few years straight after school, but now that you have been in the working world for a while, you want to look at other opportunities that will help direct your career path further and better. There are several ways to do this, here are some ideas

Study online

Doing courses online is a great way of managing your time, your job and finding the hours required to study. It is much easier if you can manage your own hours so you can work it into your daily life. Online was initially considered a softer form of studies and wasn’t given the same amount of street cred as a college or university. But now you can do a diploma of business online and it will be recognised with the same degree of legitimacy and authenticity as a regular face to face course. But it is important to be selective with which online college you decide to go with because some have a better reputation than others. And if you’re going to invest the money into studying further, you want it to count.

Join a learning group

If you join an experienced, reputable and knowledgeable group of people from whom you can further your learning, this is a great and very affordable approach. There are people who have created groups that become ‘community of practice’ leaders who create open forum dialogues and discussions with experts in the field in order to come up with creative and collaborative solutions and ideas. This is a great way to pool together ideas and learn from others. Some groups begin to form great respect and can be recognised in the broader public. They may even implement a ‘by invitation only’ policy to keep it exclusive

Go back to school

There is great respect for people, who as adults have decided to go back to the drawing board and study further. There are many reasons why people would do this, but it has a lot to do with what was mentioned previously around leaving school not knowing exactly what you want to do in life, what education you need and then only really formulating this as an adult. Sometimes you want to start all over again. There are countless stories of people going to university at an older age to become lawyers or engineers which is a huge feat. When you study as an adult you will find yourself much more focused and committed than you were as you freshman.
